Looking back at my experiences on this course, I’ve become extremely interested in portrait photography. Whether this has been in a studio, or taken in the outside environment, the theme of my work has always been similar, and that has been to explore the representation of people as victims or empowered individuals. I mainly approach my work in a conceptual way, and hope to continue to photograph alongside
charities or inquisitive individuals.
‘Așa cum o știm’
Artist Statement: ‘Așa cum o știm’ (translation: ‘As We Know It’) attempts to document the everyday lives of children and adults in the rural towns of Sacele, Comanesti and Onesti in Eastern Romania. In particular the work has looked into individuals and locations that are associated with the Gurchin Roma Community, the Bradet Residential Centre, Casa Lumina, Livieu Rebreanu, School 9 and Onesti Alexander Centre. Some of the children from these locations are currently involved with the UK charity, The Libra Foundation who have been working in Romania for years to encourage integration which has otherwise been limited. The work was created alongside this charity on their annual look/see visit to the country and provides an insight into the banal living conditions of these areas as they stand throughout the year.
